Pakistan’s livestock sector is vital for rural livelihoods but struggles with disease management and market inefficiencies due to the lack of a Livestock Identification and Traceability system, hindering efforts to transform the herd and bring value to the product.

This initiative is linked to an online application Pakistan Animal Identification & Traceability System (PAITS) , where farmers can register their livestock and farm. Tagging enables farmers to maintain detailed records of each animal’s health, breeding and productivity. Digital record system helps prevent inbreeding or indiscriminate breeding, which is crucial for enhancing the genetic potential of their cattle. Moreover, it supports farmers in making informed decisions, such as whether to keep or cull an animal based on data like age, weight at first calving, calving-to-conception interval and production quality. This information is invaluable for improving animal performance. Farmers can quickly isolate sick cattle and prevent disease spread. Tagged cattle are easily identifiable, making it harder to sell stolen animals; providing farmers with added security. Traceability proves livestock’s origin and production, opening doors to higher-value markets vis enhancing income.

Government and various private organizations offer training, resources and subsidies to farmers registered with this initiative. Farmers gain essential benefits, including access to superior conventional or gender sorted semen and embryos from elite proven bulls, comprehensive cattle vaccination and enhanced product value. Tag & Traceability is crucial for livestock farmers. By adopting this technology, they will not only secure their own livelihoods but also contribute to the growth of Pakistan’s livestock sector.
